Our entry into the quilt shop world came quite differently than most. As we were beginning to think about retirement and slowing down a little bit, our 19 year old son passed away unexpectedly. As a full-time Nurse Practitioner, Kelly needed a respite that took her somewhere away from the medical field where she worked. She found a local quilt shop. While sitting with the owners one day, Kelly mentioned that she loved the shop. Todd joked to Kelly, “You should just buy it!” The rest, as they say, is history!
We opened the doors in January 2020, just a few months before the famous COVID pandemic. It was our first entry into retail, and wasn’t supposed to be a full-time job for either of us (especially since Todd didn’t sew!) Our desire to make changes quickly consumed us with an almost full-time schedule, on top of other full-time jobs. And we love giving back to the community. Our COVID mask project allowed us to donate over 7500 masks to our community hospital and to various medical and first responder groups around the Southeast. Thank you to customers who pitched in to sew the kits we provided! We also found out that we LOVE being in the shop – especially meeting new quilters, sewers and anybody else that happens to wander in to the shop!
When you stop in, you’ll find over 1500 bolts of fabric from most major fabric manufacturers, including Free Spirit, Moda, Benartex, Quilting Treasures, and more! We also carry an extensive line of Tula Pink fabric, a large selection of pre-cuts, almost 100 panels, an assortment of finished quilts for sale, and a variety of notions, patterns and books for both quilters and garment sewers, You can choose from a wide range of classes for beginning quilters through advanced paper piecing projects. There are also learn-to-sew classes for children and adults! Our classes are small, and we’ll never cancel a class if at least one person signs up!
Some unique offerings to the shop include: E2E and custom long arming (free motion and computerized) on our APQS Lucey, used/consignment machines, quilt restoration and repair, sewing machine repair and maintenance for ANY brand of machine. We also do custom quilting and sewing for projects like custom quilts, memory quilts, pillows and stuffed animals. Our entire inventory is available online at palmettostitchesandquilts.com, and we offer quick, discounted shipping (free for orders over $100.)
Stop by and expect to stay a while! In addition to some of the best quilting and sewing advice in the area, you’re likely to get wrapped up in conversations about where you’re from, where we’re from, kids and grandkids, other hobbies, fun places to eat, and more! Our hope is that everyone that comes to visit leaves thinking they’ve been treated like they’re the most important customer that ever entered the shop because, in our mind, they are!
